Welcome and thank you for visiting the Town of Fairmount's Official website.The town was incorporated in 1850 and is located in southern Grant County. Fairmount has a population of 2,780 that grows to over 30,000 the last full weekend in September for the annual Museum Days Remembering James Dean.
The Town of Fairmount is known for its tree lined streets named after the Presidents and Trees, and for being the home town of actor James Dean. Fairmount has the small town feeling; You may come into town as a stranger but you will leave as a friend.
Fairmount has several notable residents:
James Dean who was raised in Fairmount. "Jimmy" graduated from The Fairmount High School and is buried in The Park Cemetery here in town.
Jim Davis creator of Fairmount's favorite cat Garfield. Jim was also raised here in Fairmount and graduated from The Fairmount High School.
Phil Jones a television jounalist best known for his work on CBS's 48 hours. He graduated from The Fairmount High School.
Robert Sheets, former director of the National Hurricane Center in Flordia, graduated in the same class as Jones from the Fairmount High School.
Mary Jane Ward, who was born in Fairmount, is an author of several books including The Snake Pit. Which was a Book of the Month Club selection and became a major motion picture.
While these residents may have became famous, many of our residents are invaluable to the town, and we are honored that they choose to call Fairmount home.
